How Tandoor Came To India!

We generally consider tandoor synonymous to Punjab .But that's not 100% true. Tandoori is a way of cooking.Tasty tandoori delicacies are cooked on a tandoor which is a clay oven, basically it is like a very large clay pit, large enough to hold a small fire created by slow burning wood charcoal. The heat is controlled by the amount of oxygen that is let in or let out of the pit.The direct heat of the charcoal fire intensifies the tandoor 's heat and creates a cooking temperature that easily reaches 600 degrees for cooking delicious tandoori dishes.



History of Tandoor dates back to Indus valley and Harappan civilizations of ancient India. Traces of tandoor have also been acquired from Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations.How can we forget Punjab when its tandoor.Guru Nanak Dev – the founder of Sikh religion encouraged the use of tandoor in order to remove caste barriers and promote equality amongst people, he persuaded them to construct sanjha chulha (common oven) in their neighbourhood.



Tandoori cooking can be done using four different methods. By using Radiant heat that comes from the pit of tandoor.It has effect similar to baking. Use Direct heat from charcoal to grill food stuff. Thirdly the smoke can be used. It gives exclusive smoky flavor to the dishes cooked in tandoor. Hot clay walls produces effect identical to griddling. People's favourite naan and tandoori roti are made by sticking them to the hot clay walls of the tandoor.Tandoori method of cooking is unqiue in itself as it gives amazing flavour to delicacies.

Marination is a crucial part of tandoori cooking. Ingredients that are cooked on tandoor are generally marinated twice. Marinades of almost all tandoori cuisines have yogurt as its base. Many herbs and spices are used to give enchanting flavour to dishes.

And the good part about tandoori cooking is that it is a healthy way of cooking food. High temperature in tandoor cooks the food fast making and creates no need to use external fats like butter and oil.


There is no surprise in saying that you may have already eaten famous Indian tandoori.But for the ones who are new to tandoori cuisine must definiteky try lipsmacking tandoori recipes like  tandoori chicken, tandoori fish tikka, and for vegetarians, paneer tikka, tandoori roti, naan, and kulcha.And now Tandoori Chai is also gaining popularity.
