Unique Varieties of Cheese That Are Originally Made In India

While Cheese is one of the most loved thing amongst Indians, very few for a fact, know that there are some unique varieties of cheese that originated in India. Many of these varieties are also exported to other countries as well. 

Here are a list of cheese variants which have found its origin in India

Kalari


These stretchy, stringy cheese makes for one of the most delicious road-side snacks of Kashmir. Little discs of Kalari are fried on tawa until they are crisp and golden-hued. If you are in Kashmir, you can also try the Kalari Kulcha wherein the cheese is stuffed in between a kulcha . 

Bandel

Bandel is a very popular cheese variant which you are going to find in Kolkata. Sold in Kolkata's new market, there are two versions of this cheese that is available- one being the cream coloured plain one and the other being the brown, smoked version. Each of them are quite salty in taste but when you crumble them into salads or pasta, they taste more moreish. 

Chhurpi 


Chhurpi

Chhurpi is the kind of cheese which is made from yak milk and is available in various parts of Himachal. This variant of Indian cheese is easily available in the local stalls and is sold in wrapped leaves or wrapped papers. Hard Version and Soft Version are the two versions of cheese that are available, while the hard version comes across as the kind of cheese which is more chewy, the soft version is cooked in ghee and is eaten with rice in major households.

Qudam 

Qudam Cheese

Qudam Cheese finds its origin from the Jammu and Kashmir region and is not very easily available in shops. Your first impression about this variety of cheese would be a mellow flavour but has a more rubbery and chewy texture to it.

Kalimpong Cheese

Kalimpong Cheese was started by a priest named, Brother Abraham. This variant of cheese tastes a bit acidic and is not smelly when it has aged. No matter how you use it, be it putting into sandwich or crumbling into salad, the taste would surely be exceptional.
